General Information - Leh Ladakh

Ladakh, situated at the northern part of India is the high-altitude plateau. It also has the ancient names - Maryul, ‘low land’ or ‘red land’, to distinguish from the higher Tibetan plateau. To the west, lies Kashmir whereas Himachal Pradesh to the south. The mountain ranges frame the plateau of all the sides. The Indus river in LehLadakh bisects the plateau, shaping the oasis villages over the ages.

History of Ladakh from middle age to the 19th century becomes connected intimately to Tibet in mid-8th century. Nestled in the middle of Himalayas, Ladakh is the beautiful Himalayan destination which is getting famous every year. Ladakh which means ‘the land of many passes’ is a treasure of natural resources and rich culture as heaven for the people who love adventure. The region is the perfect gateway to relieve yourself from hot months and experience something unique on a trip to Ladakh. 

LEH

The ancient capital of Ladakh region is perched at the altitude of 3,350m amidst the beautiful mountains which softly combine to the oasis of lush fields. 

Now, Leh has emerged as the essential destination for tourists all over the globe providing usual holiday. It is the perfect place for trekking, climbing, camping and white-water rafting. The region is filled with many glorious places and Buddhist monasteries. For centuries, Leh has remained the important commercial junction linking Central Asia with Kashmir and Kulu in Himachal Pradesh with China and Tibet.

While on a trip to Leh, one will get to explore many monasteries and the nearest one which is situated close to Leh is Shankar Gompha at the distance of 3km. 

Temperature

The temperature in summer remains pleasant whereas in winter it goes to the extreme. The winter temperature gets as low as -30 degrees in Leh&Kargil and -60 degrees in Drass. Sub-zero temperature starts from December till February whereas Zero degree can be experienced during rest of the winter months. During the time of summer, maximum temperature rises from 20-35 degree in June-August. 

Clothing

Normal t-shirts, shirts or tops in summer months and in winter heavy warm and woolen jackets are recommended while on a trip toLadakh.

Languages spoken

Many languages are spoken like Shina, Balti, Changshat, and Brokshat and Boti is the first local language. In offices, schools, and restaurants, Hindi and English are also used.

Passport and Permit

The permit isn’t required for tourists to Leh. However, all the foreigners are required to register themselves at Rumtse, Drass, and Serchu if they are planning to travel overland. People who are traveling by air get the registration done at the airport. It is necessary to get the permit for some of the restricted areas in LehLadakh such as Tsokar, Tsomoriri, Dhahanu, Pangong Lake and Nubra Valley which can be obtained from District Magistrate, Leh.

Avoid acute sickness

Acute sickness in mountains can take place to any person at the altitude above 10,000ft. above the sea level. Therefore, make sure to take complete rest on the day of arrival and get yourself acclimatized.

ATM Machine & Credit Cards

Credit Card is accepted by few hotels with 2% service charge. State Bank of India, Jammu & Kashmir Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank and Punjab National Bank have placed their ATM machine in the main city of Leh.

Ladakh Environmental Fee

The collection started in the year 2012 which is Rs 200 for the domestic people and Rs 300 for foreigners. Laborers are also included who are from outside the region, they’ll have to pay Rs 200 per person.

The purpose of collecting fees is to generate money to take care of the pollution which is caused by the tourists. This will help both the locals and visitors for the need to preserve the ecology of the place.
