Getting to LehLadakh

Flights to Leh operates all year round. Roads within Ladakh remain open throughout the year. However, the passes leading to Ladakh get buried under the snow during winter months. Therefore, if you would like to take a road trip, the time of the year will be an important consideration.

Two roads lead to LehLadakh:

Srinagar – Leh Highway

It is the most reliable and least challenging route which runs alongside the Indus river via Drass, Zoji La Pass, Fotu Pass and Kargil. It remains open from mid-May to early June till the October-end or mid-November. It is better to avoid the months of July and August, as you’ll have to face both the monsoon rain as well as pilgrims heading towards Amarnath Yatra. Explore the roads in between with summer tour packages.

Manali – Leh Highway

The most famous route goes through the five high mountain passes which include Rohtang Pass in PirPanjal range and three others in Zanskar range (Lachulung Pass, Baralacha Pass and Taglang Pass at 17,480 feet above the sea level). The route has steep ascent which can lead to altitude sickness. It remains open from mid-June till early October. However, travel can be risky from September because of more chances of snow and reduced options for transport and accommodations. Therefore, it is advised to go for summer tour packages so that you travel comfortably.
