Khardung La Leh Ladakh

Located at the altitude of 18,379 ft. above the level of the sea, Khardung La makes a person feel on top of the world. It was believed once to be the highest motor pass all over the world, but the facts have proved that it is among the highest motor passes in India. The mountain pass in Ladakh was prepared for the motors in the year 1976 and got opened in 1988 for the public.

Temperature at Pass

The temperature keeps on varying rapidly. One cannot predict the correct temperature here. However, the average temperature here reaches 20 degree Celsius whereas in winters it can even reach below -40 degrees. Khardung La pass gets wrapped by the snow of 10 feet at the time of snowfall.

Road conditions to reach the Pass

Reaching to the place is one of the kind feelings. But, it isn’t the simple task to reach such altitude. It takes a lot of effort of a person to get the feeling of victory. The first 24 km of the road from Leh to pass is made of concrete. Out of the 39 km route, the next 15 km is uneven which consist of loose rocks, dirt as well as some streams appearing because of snow melting. Going beyond this is simple as the roads are maintained.

How to reach Pass from Leh?

Khardung La lies at the distance of 39 km from Leh. The enchanting views on the way make the journey worth to experience at least once. Although the pass is a gateway to Nubra Valley, people grab this opportunity to reach and spend the best time of life here only. With time, traffic is also increasing at this vehicle access road.

There are four stops in between and they are Leh – Phyang – South Pullu – Khardung La. Since the pass is gaining popularity; entry, as well as exit timings, are restricted strictly. To run the traffic smoothly, vehicles coming from Leh are allowed from 9 AM to 1 PM. Similarly, the exit timings are from 1 PM to 5 PM.
